China Travel Tips for UK Passengers
Everything you need to know before you fly — from visa requirements to navigating one of the world's most fascinating destinations.
Visa Requirements
UK passport holders require a Chinese tourist visa (L visa) before travel. You will need a confirmed hotel booking or an invitation letter from a Chinese travel agency. The standard visa is valid for 30 days. Allow at least 2 to 4 weeks for processing and ensure your passport has at least six months' validity and two blank pages.
Currency & Payments
China uses the Chinese Yuan (CNY/RMB). Cash is useful in rural areas, but mobile payments via WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate daily life in cities — set these up before arrival. Budget around £40–£120 per day for mid-range travel. China is generally very affordable for food and local transport.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer the most comfortable weather (15–25°C) with clear skies — ideal for sightseeing and photography. Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, especially in the south. Winter (December–February) is bitterly cold in the north but mild in Guangzhou and Shanghai.
